Celebrating their 35th Anniversary, Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau is dedicated to preserving and performing traditional hula styles that descend from the lineage of O‘ahu’s renowned Maiki Aiu Lake. Lake, a leading figure in the Hawaiian and hula renaissance of the 1970s, taught that “the art of Hawaiian dance express[es] all that we see, hear, smell, touch, taste and feel.” From these teachings, Michael Pili Pang, founder, kumu hula (hula master), and artistic director of Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau, draws from the history and folklore of Hawai‘i, as well as the monarchy period, and, through traditional hula, styling, music and chant, presents emotionally stirring performances that honor tradition while creating hula for today. Notes Pang: “We are guided by the belief the best foundation in creating something new is a thorough understanding of the past.”

Michael Pili Pang studied under master artists Lake and Mae Klein and master chanter Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele. With his hālau hula (hula school and performing group), he takes the folklore of the Hawaiian Islands and, through traditional hula, styling, music and chant, presents emotionally stirring performances, and shares knowledge through lecture-demonstrations and educational materials. Performances feature the traditional styles that were passed down through his “hula genealogy”, alongside new choreographies. The company has won top honors at hula and chant competitions throughout Hawai‘i.
