Opera Modesto is proud to present the 5th Story into Song Literacy Initiative Production: the professional premiere of the delightful opera, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Fallen Giant. This clever mashup of Jack and the Beanstalk with Sherlock Holmes is a treat for all ages.

American Lyric Theater (ALT) is the only company in the United States that offers extensive, full-time mentorship for emerging operatic writers. ALT’s programs focus on serving the needs of artists, developing new works, and collaborating with producing companies to help usher those works into the repertoire.

Founded originally as Townsend Opera Players in 1983, Opera Modesto is celebrating its 40th year of producing operas, concerts and a variety of community events designed to enrich the quality of life in California’s Central Valley. Since 2018 the non-profit has been led by international opera singers Roy Stevens (General Director) and Annalisa Winberg (Artistic Director).

Opera Modesto’s Story into Song Literacy Initiative (SISLI) is a one-of-a -kind program that leverages the power of great literature, storytelling and performing arts as tools to increase interest in reading and the arts. Previous SISLI productions include several premiere operas: The world premieres of Annabel (Composer-Deborah Kavasch, Librettist-Linda Bunney-Sarhad, Commissioned by Opera Modesto, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee) and The Race (Composer-Deborah Kavasch, Librettist-Linda Bunney-Sarhad, Commissioned by Opera Modesto, a mashup of 5 Aesop’s Fables) an award-winning movie filmed in the central valley and available in over fifteen bi-lingual versions; the premiere of the one act chamber opera version of Bless Me Ultima in Spanglish (Composer – Hector Armienta, based on the book by Rudolfo Anaya); the US premiere of Dulcinea in Spanish (Composer – Mauricio Sotelo, based on Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes); The US Premiere of the orchestrated version of Mansfield Park (Composer – Jonathan Dove, based on the book by Jane Austen) as well as the 3rd ever production of Tell Tale Heart (Composer – Stewart Copeland of The Police, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s story).
